Cognitive Labor: The Exhausting Superpower
Remember when you were a kid and someone would ask you “if you could have any superpower, what would you choose?” If you’re a woman, chances are you have acquired many of these superpowers without even realizing it - but sadly, having these superpowers is not quite as great as we thought when we were kids.
We’ve heard from over 100 women, what have we learned?
We’ve talked to over 100 women about the often overlooked issue of cognitive burden - asking women how they feel, why they are stressed, and how they manage that stress. To be honest, the results are NOT shocking. Women are managing the majority of the burden in their households, experience constant stress as a result, and do not feel that their efforts are recognized.
Burden in Your Brain and Body
Cognitive labor does not come without a price. Cognitive labor translates to cognitive burden without acknowledgement of its existence, equitable division, and lack of structured tools or supports to manage it successfully.
We know cognitive labor is invisible to others but cognitive burden may be invisible to you in the way it impacts your health and wellness.
I really want to help, just tell me what to do
Cognitive labor is what makes you the "project manager" that runs your family’s home. You conceptualize, plan, and coordinate every detail - just as would be expected of a project manager executing an outcome in the workplace.
